ENGAGE: New National Youth Empowerment Project Launched

Recover Guyana, supported by Scotiabank and Van Oord, officially launched the ENGAGE Green Entrepreneurship Programme on Thursday, December 5, 2024, at the National Library, introducing a transformative initiative aimed at empowering youth across Guyana. Designed to equip individuals with tools, resources, and knowledge, ENGAGE fosters the creation and growth of environmentally sustainable businesses in eco-tourism, renewable energy, waste management, organic farming, and other green sectors.

ENGAGE is set to train over 150 Guyanese youth aged 16 to 35 in green technologies, eco-friendly innovations, and sustainable business practices. The programme offers participants a comprehensive platform to develop business profiles, create actionable plans, and formally register their enterprises. Notably, ENGAGE will provide up to $2 million in grants to support the most viable and promising business ideas, ensuring participants have the financial support to turn their concepts into reality.

Dr. Dave Lalltoo, President of Recover Guyana, highlighted the visionary goals of the ENGAGE initiative during the launch. He further revealed that the response to the programme has been overwhelming, with 133 applications already received from Region Three and 225 applications from Region Six. An additional 250 applications have been logged through the regional physical database maintained by Recover Guyana. This demonstrates a strong interest in and demand for environmentally sustainable entrepreneurship among Guyanese youth.

The ENGAGE programme reflects a robust collaboration between Scotiabank, Van Oord, and Recover Guyana, underscoring a shared commitment to youth empowerment and environmental stewardship. Nafeeza Gaffoor, Country Manager of Scotiabank Guyana, expressed gratitude and pride in partnering on the initiative. Van Oord prepared a statement showing support and confidence in the initiative as well. The Regional Health Officer of Region 3, among others, also delivered remarks. The programme was also accompanied by musical entertainment in the form of a violinist and a singer.

Information provided by Recover Guyana at the launch indicated that the pilot phase of ENGAGE will launch in January 2025, targeting 150 participants from Regions Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara) and Six (East Berbice-Corentyne). Participants will engage in tailored training and mentorship programmes, gaining essential skills and building networks to launch and scale their businesses. The pilot phase is supported by a budget of approximately $20 million, emphasizing the collaborative financial commitment to this groundbreaking initiative.

In addition to fostering practical skills, ENGAGE forecasts a nationwide rollout to all regions by 2026. This expansion envisions creating a robust and widespread movement of young entrepreneurs who lead the way in sustainability-focused innovation and economic growth.

ENGAGE stands as a beacon of hope and transformation for Guyana’s youth, providing the tools and opportunities needed to turn green business ideas into thriving ventures. By prioritizing environmental sustainability and innovation, ENGAGE paves the way for a greener and more resilient Guyana.
